Logitech G510 Review – Gaming Keyboard Plus

Logitech is a recognizable brand, well known for all kinds of mice, keyboards, game pads and any other computer accessory you can think of.

The G-series of gaming equipment has many fans among PC gamers, and the G510 keyboard aims to please. Logitech’s products are rarely disappointing – sure, they cost more than generic keyboards and mice, but on the other hand I’m still sitting here with the same Logitech mouse that I bought about five years ago. The G510 gaming keyboard is one of the manufacturer’s more extravagant models that competes with equivalent products from Razer.

It’s even equipped with screen, which is quite simple but adds a bit of luxury feel to the unit. The screen provides some additional and possibly superfluous information about the status of your games and OS. In games, you get updated information on health bars, server settings, etc. In Windows, you can get an overview of resource use, media player activity and so on. You can also use it with the Sideshow feature in Windows.

There are 18 programmable macro keys, which can also be used in three groups, giving you access to 54 macros in total. Programmable keys are valuable in all sorts of games, but some that come to mind in particular are RPGs and strategy games.

As for the keyboard itself; it’s comfortable and offers a nice tactile response. If you take some time off from gaming on occasion you won’t be disappointed with how it handles old-fashion office work. A nice feature that is common in gaming keyboards and also present in the G510 is that the keys are backlit, and you can even choose your favorite color – a feature borrowed from the Alienware laptops.

There is no USB hub in the G510. Instead, Logitech has opted for integrated audio controls and two mini-jacks for connecting a headset. We would rather have had those extra USB ports. It’s not that much of a hassle to connect a headset straight into your computer, which no doubt has jacks for it also.

On the whole, there is no doubt that Logitech delivers a solid game product in the G510. It is comfortable to use and comes with enough macro keys to please just about any gamer. The tiny screen is nice to have, but more of a novelty than something actually useful. Backlit keys are always a plus, as is the fact that you get to fiddle with the colors. If you are looking for a new gaming keyboard, the Logitech G510 is definitely worth considering.
