Super Blu-ray lets You Burn 500GB on a Single Disc

The U.S. electronics manufacturer General Electric (GE) has announced a decent breakthrough in optical storage technology. The company’s research department has succeeded in creating discs that can store up to 500 GB while remaining as fast as regular Blu-ray.

This has been made possible by using a so-called micro-holographic material, which is a revolutionary technique for optical storage. GE presented this material already some years ago and now it has apparently progressed further. Micro-holographic storage is short for using light to alter the chemical properties of the disc, causing microscopic patterns that are interpreted as data. The storage is three dimensional, meaning that the entire disc volume is used instead of just a slice in the middle.

By increasing the sensitivity of the material – among other things – they have been able to retain the speed of the storage medium at a level that at least equals the regular Blu-ray format. This makes the technology very interesting for the consumer market and may result in that we will see these discs in action in a foreseeable future–both as a storage and entertainment medium.

The technology will require a new reading technology, but this will in turn be backwards compatible with current optical storage media. There is no information about where and when a possible market launch will take place, but rest assured that we will keep you posted.

Although the printer itself looks like an early prototype for a microwave oven or some kind of toaster, there’s presumably some state-of-the-art technology hiding behind that, not overly attractive, exterior. If you put in a little something along with some plastic, balsa wood and wax it will “print” out a replica in 3D for you–and
